Who are they?
Who are they?
- Welcome to the property management blog, our diary of our property management experience. I once heard someone say that we hire people for what they know and fire them for who they are. I thought that was an interesting way to look at it. We often do not know enough about who our new hires are and what drives them. We often hire because of their experience and their skill sets. Then we have them on staff for a while and find that they are a poor fit for the organization. It is usually because their personalities do not mesh with other employees or customers. So how do you find out more about who people are before you hire them? You can hire them for a temporary assignment and see how they do. You can start them on a 30 day probationary period, so if it doesn’t work out, you can simply choose not to have them continue after the 30 days are up. This will give you an out, but it won’t prevent the problem. Why not observe people on their current job now, before getting involved with them? You can have secret shoppers observe them and report back on personality traits and their ways of dealing with people. Maybe this would allow us to hire people for who they are and what they know.
