American Heritage Dictionary definition Natalie is one of our PhoneSmart team who has earned a lot of trust from her co-workers and from our clients. She told me she has been hearing the word trust thrown around a lot lately. You see it on a computer prompt (do you trust the sender of this email?). You hear it in public conversation (trust me….it will be ok) and then there is the applied trust. You trust the babysitter will keep the kids safe. You trust the guy coming at you from the cross street won’t run the red light. You trust the waiter will have your order correct, and trust the chef will make the food yummy. Then you have the use of the word as an entity: a real estate trust, a trust fund. The word has a lot of power. The power you put in someone’s hand when you trust them is enormous. The financial power of a trust also carries a lot of weight. Don’t you get a different response when you mention a real estate company as oppossed to a real estate trust? How do you use the word and the concept to rent space? How do you use it to attract capital? Your tenants, staff, vendors and investors need to place trust in you. Your tenants need to trust you enough to stay and refer their acquaintances. Your staff needs to trust you in order to put their hearts and their backs into your projects. Vendors need to trust you, in order to give you their best service and their best terms. Investors and financiers need to trust you in order to accept your terms and extend the best conditions. Here are a few slogans that actually work in practice. Don’t forget to put them into practice to help build the kind of trust you need to succeed. Under promise and over deliver. Treat people like you want to be treated. Share the bad news and the good. What goes around comes around. Bye for now, Tron
