The Fun Of Apartments

The Fun Of Apartments

  • One of the best experiences of college is living in small apartments. They certainly can be filled with their fair share of hassles, but this type of living gives college students an idea of what the real world is going to be like for a while. The dorms are usually required for most college freshmen, but living in the dorms does not give students the kind of life experiences that can be had renting apartments. Remember your first time living in an apartment? Usually the first time you live in a community rental area it is like a voyage or ride into the throngs of life. Some have cracks in the ceiling. Some have sinks and drains clogged so tight that an earthworm could not find a home in them. Whatever the case may be, it is hard to find someone who does not have a funny story from living in a community rental area. This is because community rental areas by their intrinsic nature are in some ways designed for good stories. So many people move in and out of these buildings. With those people come a host of different life experiences and situations. The old adage if walls could talk probably would serve as a catalyst for libraries of information from each wall in apartments. All of these stories can add to the charm of renting. Even in the most dingy and old of buildings, character can be found if you look in the right places. For instance, maybe that hole in the tile is from a toddler who lost his first tooth, although maybe a little prematurely. Who knows, a famous artist could have made that peeling paint while their career was still budding. These examples may not hold any value for the tenants of rentals with insects diving in their tomato soup, but for the rest of you, think it over. On the flip side, there are some apartment buildings that have no rational explanation as to why they are still standing. These are the buildings that call into question the attentiveness of our local health inspectors. How do the walls not just crumble? Is that ceiling made of clay and mud? Ahh, the joys of college life are grand. Who could want to pass up this experience while still young and adventurous? While it is probably not the best idea to rent a place that still has asbestos in the ceiling or rats in the walls, the mid-level apartment may have some real character building left in them. Cheap noodles, all night parties, exams that you should have prepared for an extra three weeks, none of these quite enliven the college experience like apartments do. By living in an apartment, you learn how to pay bills on your own. Also, you get to enjoy things like fixing the clogged toilet when the landlord refuses to come. Of course there is the exhilaration of a rainstorm spent running buckets from one end of the apartment to another. Yes, many of the learning experiences of living in apartments revolve around the ridiculous scenarios you may find yourself in while living in certain places. But, at least you know the apartment walls will record them. They will bear witness to the frantic 2 a.m. calls to an unresponsive landlord, the booming bass sounds coming from next door and the other sounds which you may wish you did not have to hear.
