The Calm Property Manager Before the Storm

The Calm Property Manager Before the Storm

Though, we are not in hurricane season yet, it is never too early to prepare for a hurricane, especially since they are becoming more frequent in odd times of the year. Early preparation for a major storm like a hurricane is just good property management. Often it takes the threat of a natural disaster to motivate property management to prepare for a major storm. This only gets property management caught up in the panic with everyone else who waited for the threat. The problem with this method is emergency items and food supplies in stores run dry. Or property management must wait in long lines wasting valuable preparation time. The trick is to be prepared before the threats. This ensures the safety of your property and yourself. Here are some property management tips to prepare for a hurricane before the season begins.

During a hurricane threat, news coverage always shows people including property management buying large pieces of plywood and working vigorously to board up windows and doors. Anyone living in a hurricane zone area should already have plywood cut to fit and ready to install. A better option is to have permanent storm shutters installed on the house to protect windows. This way all you would have to do is close them and evacuate.

Trim tree and shrub branches around your home to prevent them from smashing into your home during a hurricane. Much damage comes from dead tree limbs that property management neglects to cut. They break off easily during a hurricane and their weight crushes the roof.

Property management should always make sure to clear clogged rain gutters and downspouts a few times a year. This not only helps during a hurricane, it prevents basement flooding during any rain storm.

Designate a safe room on the property. If the property management has tenants, he should pick the safest area on the property where tenants can hide to ride out the storm if the tenants did not evacuate.

When preparing for a possible emergency situation, it is best to think first about the basics of survival: fresh water, food, clean air and warmth. Here are some recommended items to include in a basic emergency kit to be prepared by property management:

• Water, one gallon of water per person per day for at least three days, for drinking and sanitation**• Food, at least a three day supply of nonperishable food • Battery-powered or hand crank radio • Flashlight and extra batteries • First aid kit • Whistle or air-horn to signal for help • Dust mask, to help filter contaminated air • Moist towels, garbage bags for personal sanitation • Wrench or pliers to turn off utilities • Can opener for food Property management should make sure the emergency supply kit is stored in a safe zone and easily accessible. Property management should also let a few tenants know where to find the kit just in case the property management is not able to recover it. A secondary kit also can be prepared to help keep people calm during a disaster. Keep a supply of books and games for kids. If property management allows pets, keep a pet food supply and extra water for the critters as well. Put some blankets and extra clothing in a secure storage space to stay dry and warm. If property management lives in hurricane zone area, it does not make sense to wait for the last minute to prepare for a storm. It is not a matter of if, it is a matter of when a hurricane will strike. So you might as well get prepared. Self Storage Business Alaska Boat Storage Miami Storage
