Structure changes with you

Structure changes with you

  • Today’s property management blog comes from Liz, one of our colleagues at PhoneSmart. We see a lot of companies we serve struggle with their internal structures. Here is her take on the subject. Life without Structure We all here people complain that there is too much structure in some aspect of their life. Another term people will sometimes use is, “strict”. This is too strict, that is too strict. We all here it and we may agree or disagree at the time. The thing is, is that without structure, where would we be? We all need structure in our lives to help keep us happy and sane. It may seem crazy, but a world without structure is a world in chaos. Structure is needed everywhere. We need structure at work, at home, at the grocery store, etc. As a rule, we as humans need to know how things are and how they are supposed to be. Things are made so much easier if we know this. If we know what we are supposed to do and how to do it, things seem to go more smoothly. At work, the structure should already be put in place. We go to work, do the job that is assigned to us and do that job as we know we are expected to do it. Who’s to say that you can’t have fun while doing it? No structure system should be void of fun, but the structure should still be there. In the business world, structure is put in place to keep the business running and to keep it running smoothly. That’s how it is. If a business owner does not implement structure, where will that business be in 10 years? Or even 5 years? Businesses don’t all structure the same way. How can they? Every business is different and therefore the structuring of the business should be done based on the elements of the business itself. For example, if your business has a total of 10 employees, then you probably wouldn’t need as much structure as a business that has say 50 employees. However, without structure, there is little or no way of knowing who’s doing what, how often they do it, how well they do it, etc. With structure, a business owner can keep tabs on how his/her business is running. He/She can also be in the know about how the employees are helping to run that business. Because as we all know, a business is only as good as its employees. Structured employees come to work, work while they are at work, and take pride in the work that they have accomplished and know that they helped make a difference in how the business ran while they were there. Hopefully, they will know that the difference they made was a good one and that they can be proud of the business itself. Unstructured employees may come to work, they may not. They may do the work assigned to them, or they may not. My guess is, they don’t leave at the end of the day feeling like they can be proud of the work they did or proud of the business itself. To sum up, we may all complain about too much structure in some part of our life at some time. But we should all realize that without the structure, life and business just wouldn’t be as good.
