I was travelling yesterday to Orange County California to a meeting PhoneSmart is co-spnsoring for the California Self Storage Association. I enjoy Orange county, because you can see how the property management people have maximized revenue on every piece of ground. And being near the water makes for a lovely atmosphere.

I also enjoyed going through the airports at St. Louis and Santa Ana. Not every one likes Lambert Field in St. Louis, but I do. It has a wonderful history. It started pretty much as a flat place near the corn fields where early flyers tried to get up in the air and stay up in the air. It is expanding again and turning into the next generation of air field. It is also an amazing property from a property management point of view. The amount of revenue that is generated from the airport is incredible. Each gate generates fees. Each passenger generates dollars for the parking, hotel, airline and food services. My flight was full, so you know American was making money on the route yesterday. I also love watching everyone working at airports. There are so many “moving parts” to an airport property, it is like watching a symphony to see it all working together. At first glance it all looks easy.

I also enjoy John Wayne airport, although it is a little un-nerving to land there. The flights come in a little hot and land a little hard. You are basically dropping into a dense urban area and making it seem as smooth as one can. But for doing business in Orange County, you couldn’t ask for an easier trip. Any place is just a short ride form the airport, even if you take the back streets and the scenic routes as I often do. I love to see the different neighborhoods and business areas and the traffic patterns. This is also a great time of year to see the beautiful landscaping and the awesome boats along the shore and in the marinas.

Talking about property management, how would you like to be the chief stewart on board one of those mega-yachts you see near Balboa Bay. You would have to run them like a hotel, like a health club and like a racing car team all at the same time. It would be interesting to follow the chief stewart around for a day and see how it is done.
