New People on the Floor
- Robin Turner, Phone Smart call center manager talks about the potential of new call center operators Welcome to the PhoneSmart property management blog, where we write about property management, property management trends in the industry. During the hiring process you can only speculate about what the new person will achieve. They can tell you anything they’d like to tell you about how they would handle a situation or about their work ethics. You can look at their application and previous places of employment and get an idea of what types of positions they’ve held in the past, maybe even an idea of what their responsibilities where. You could give them a prescreen test and they pass it fairly well, or even with flying colors. During the training process you can get a better idea of how they will be as a permanent employee. Do they ask questions, take notes, and listen carefully with interest to what you are saying? They may even apply everything you’ve taught them during the training process and you think to yourself, “Wow, they are going to be great”. We all like to think of the best-case scenarios and hope for the best, but keep in mind… “Don’t count your chickens before they hatch.” It’s always good to let the new hires know that there is a probationary period. (Ours is 30 days). Some people make a great “first impression”. But true colors show over time and through different situations. After training, when you have released them on their own, keep evaluating them from afar without their knowledge and you’ll get a more accurate account of what to expect in the future. Are they still the same go-getter without you over their shoulder? Do they take ownership? Do they still ask questions when they get stumped and turn to you for advice? Are they continuing to learn and improve? If not, then it may not be a good match for your company.
