Knock, Knock Who’s There…?
Knock, Knock Who’s There?
- Written by Angela Perry, call center representative Becky. Becky who? This is the typical question that lingers in our heads as we pass one another in the work place. We recognize the person by face but the other details are a blur. Look around your work place and see how many co-workers of yours do you know? It is one thing to know them, but it is another thing to know about them. I am not saying that each and every one of us should be “bosom buddies,” but I am recommending that we know more than the person’s face. Wouldn’t it be good for a change to put a name to that familiar face? Of course it would. This occurred to me when I watched my son participate in an activity during his 4H meeting. The leader broke the group up into two different groups. Next, she and another parent held a sheet between the two groups at eye level (which of course for the children it was above their heads). Since the children were in a single file line; the one at the beginning of each line would step up to the center of the sheet. On the count of three the sheet was removed and the children had to say the other one’s name before the other one said theirs. This continued until each child had a turn at the sheet. I recall one time that I helped my son do a homework assignment in the middle of the school year, where he had a list of names of all of the children in his classroom and he had to write one thing about that person. This not only familiarize him with the name of the person and seeing a mental picture of the child’s face, but it also sees how observant the children are of their classmates. During this exercise about 80 percent of the class observed that my son wore glasses I thought that it was a pretty creative way to get to know one another. I took these simple exercises and applied them to my life. At my job, I hold the position as a trainer. Because of my position that I hold, it is hard for me NOT to know something about each person in my work environment. However, I look around and wonder how many of my co workers do not know something about the person that may be sitting to the left or right of the person. Another thing that I see that happens in the work place is that you may know the person by face and name and do not speak to that person. I am guilty of this. It is not done intentionally but I find myself preoccupied by another project that has taken over my mind. I even find my supervisor and the director not speaking as the day begins. I have learned that it is not personal it is just that they are preoccupied. Many of times one has to initiate the conversation, and majority of the time it is replied with a cheerful response. I often think about us as adults taking the sheet down or passing a sheet of all the employees and naming something (other than their name) about the person that is on the piece of paper.
