Apartments are housing units which are parts of a building and this concept of multiple units in a single building is not only popular but quite old. You can get both types of units - of your own or on lease.

Generally any such building is designed to fulfill some purpose. That means the design of the building is guided by the purpose of the residents who are willing to stay there. Every type of facilities from marketing to medical are tried to be provided to the owners. Sometimes an old, large building is divided into some parts and is let out to people. In United States apartments are mainly available for hire and sometimes the building owners together form a cooperative.

The type of any dwelling can vary. The cheapest of all styles is called a studio residence and the others in the same category are termed efficiency, bed-sit or bachelor style apartments . In these types you will get living, dining, kitchen, bedroom all combined in a large room. Only a small separate room is used for the bathroom. The larger ones are known by the number of bedrooms that are on offer. They can be one bed-roomed, two bed-roomed, three bed-roomed and so on. Depending on various sizes homes have one or more entrance. Depending on the location it may be furnished or unfurnished. Another unique style is garden residence. These types are one or maximum two-storied high. They have their own entrance. These are one or two-bedroom house units with a garage and a garden facility.

Other facilities such as laundry, water supply, electric supply, heating system may be common or separate. Other modern-day facilities such as telephone, cable television, parking spaces, air conditioner, and extra store space are charged separately. In a dwelling where the house owner rents his home to different people the owner places restrictions on tenant regarding cleanliness, noise pollution or keeping pets. In a small building where the number of units is not more than three or four the garbage is disposed of in a trash container. But in a large building where the number of units is high, the garbage is generally disposed in a common trash bin. In some places apartments are called flats. Where an industrial warehouse or commercial places converted to such homes it is called a loft. Sometimes a part of any such home is kept aside for the use of the relatives of the building owner. This dwelling is called the in-law home.

It is also called by the name granny flat. In Canada it is called basement suites or mother-in-law suites. In Russia there is communal dwelling where bathroom and the kitchen are shared among inhabitants of different units. Living in such kinds of residences is the style of the day. There are more and more people who are opting for this kind of home, as these are much comfortable than others. The prices of apartments can vary not only because of the sizes but also the facilities that are available and also on the location of the buildings. Moreover, any downtown residences are normally priced more than one than is in the suburbs or a bit far from the hub of the city. The prices also vary from state to state and the various state laws regarding residential ownership can also be a deciding factor on the price.
