Energy Smart
- Welcome to the property management blog, where we look at issues effecting the property management world. I was looking at Business 2.0 yesterday and reading an article about wind energy and how it is making an impact in many areas of the world. There was an interesting chart that showed where fossil fuels were produced and where they were used. Being of Norwegian heritage, I looked at Norway on the map, because the Norwegians have done a few smart things over the years. They were a seafaring nation for many generations. When they no longer where big players in the merchant marine industry, they transferred their knowledge of the sea and of building sea going vessles into building oil drilling rigs in the North Sea and became a major oil producer. But they also have been developing hydro-electric power for years. They have so much moving water in their mountains and fjiords that they use fossil fuels for only a very small percent of their energy production. Why have the middle eastern oil producers not followed suit? The middle eastern producers could get 80% of their energy from the wind and the sun while continuing to make huge profits from those of us who are still dependent on fossil fuels. And what about us in the USA? With all the zillions of acres of roofs we all manage, we could produce billions of mega-watts of power from wind and sun, too. This could create a whole new profit center on the balance sheet for each property. Right next to rent and submetering, would be an income line for power generation. Wouldn’that be nice? bye for now, Tron
